The Healthcare industry, both public service and private, has been transformed in recent years though the adoption of GS1 Standards, Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), Unique Device Identification (UDI), Serialization and electronic procurement (eProcurement) initiatives. The main drive since 2014 has been the requirement to register medical devices into the FDA’s Global Unique Device Identification Database (GUDID).

The vast majority of initiatives in place require medical device manufacturers to adopt the use of GS1 Standards to uniquely identify their products and locations. The Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and Global Location Number (GLN) are key enablers, and without them it will become near-in impossible to conduct business.
